Oak Alley Plantation

There are no other settings in the world that exemplify the Antebellum South quite like Oak Alley Plantation. To cast your gaze down the alley of ancient oaks, is like looking through a window into history itself. The magnificent example of Greek Revival architecture sets at the end of a quarter mile alley of oaks that are not equaled anywhere in the south or perhaps in the world itself. The home was built in 1839 but the alley of giants was planted as early as 1690 and were already massive when the mansion was built. There is no record of who planted the oaks or if there was an earlier structure at the end of the alley, long since gone by the time the present mansion was built. No other plantations in the south at this time would have had such an alley of oaks of this size. Many of the southern plantations have similar alleys now but at the height of their prosperity, their trees would have been small. Located on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River in Vacherie, Louisiana, Oak Alley is the crown jewel of the south and has been filling travelers with awe ever since the first settlers traveled up the river seeking their fortunes in the rich soil which was the base of the Louisiana economy. The land was purchased by wealthy sugar baron Valcour Aime in 1830 and later traded the property to his brother-in-law Jacques Telespore Roman who built the present mansion.
