Sol y Sombra

Chimney Rock, Ghost Ranch, Abiquiú, NM

When I arrived at the spot where I wanted to shoot Chimney Rock from, it was about 30 minutes before sunset. I set up the shot and waited for the sun to go down a bit. From where I was standing, I could see O’Keeffe’s house at a distance in the valley. I was almost shooting against the sun. Then, it happened all too suddenly, as if a show is about to begin and the curtain has been lifted. The last rays of the sun were grazing the rocks on all the right edges and even the shrubs and bushes were ablaze. As if this was not enough, the sky was just too great and it was changing every minute. Although a bit uncharacteristic for New Mexico this time of the year, tropical storm Odile was turning the sky into a magical background for Chimney Rock. The place was suddenly turned into a wonderland. I was trigger happy and wanted to capture every minute of the sunset. I developed several pictures from this shoot and I will post a few here. I named this image 'Sol y Sombra,' meaning the Sun and the Shadow, the name of the house where Georgia O’Keeffe lived her last few years in Santa Fe, NM. It was her legacy at this ranch that brought me to capture the beautiful sunset that day.
