MONASTERIO DE LOS JERÓNIMOS DE SANTA MARÍA DE BELÉM - MONASTERY OF JERÓNIMOS OF SANTA MARÍA DE BELÉM

            The Jeronimos Monastery of Santa María de Belém is an old monastery of the Order of St. Jerome and is located in the neighborhood of Belém.
Designed in Manueline style by the architect Juan de Castillo, it was commissioned by King Manuel I of Portugal to commemorate the lucky return of India from Vasco de Gama. The first constructive stage of the new church began in 1514 and was expanded and modified until the twentieth century. It was financed by 5% of the taxes obtained from the oriental spices, except for those of pepper, cinnamon and clove, whose rents went directly to the Crown.
It is a huge monastery, I do not know how many meters it is long, but even from a certain distance and giving my camera the maximum amplitude, I could not photograph it whole. The whole door, sculpted, will be in another photo, otherwise the magnificence of her sculptures would go unnoticed.
We saw the exterior, the church and the Cloister, also of unparalleled beauty. The left side of the monastery, I believe is currently dedicated to exhibitions and events. I do not know if there are still friars left.
Distracted by taking pictures, I lost the group and when I raised my head I was alone. Luckily one of my friends missed me and they came looking for me.

El Monasterio de los Jerónimos de Santa María de Belém es un antiguo monasterio de la Orden de San Jerónimo y que se ubica en el barrio de Belém. 
Diseñado en estilo manuelino por el arquitecto Juan de Castillo, fue encargado por el rey Manuel I de Portugal para conmemorar el afortunado regreso de la India de Vasco de Gama.  La primera etapa constructiva de la iglesia nueva comenzó en 1514 y fue ampliándose y modificándose hasta el siglo XX. Se financió gracias al 5% de los impuestos obtenidos de las especias orientales, a excepción de los de la pimienta, la canela y el clavo, cuyas rentas iban directamente a la Corona.
Es un monasterio enorme, ignoro cuantos metros tiene de largo, pero aun desde una cierta distancia y dando a mi cámara la máxima amplitud, no conseguí fotografiarlo entero. La puerta toda ella esculpida, será en otra foto, ya que de otra forma, la magnificencia de sus esculturas, pasaría desapercibida.
Vimos el exterior, la iglesia y el Claustro, también de una belleza sin par. La parte izquierda del monasterio, creo que actualmente está dedicada a exposiciones y eventos. Ignoro si aún quedan frailes.
Distraído haciendo fotografías, perdí el grupo y cuando levanté la cabeza estaba solo. Menos mal que alguno de mis amigos me echó en falta y salieron a buscarme.
