St. Herbert's Island, Derwentwater, Lake District National Park, Cumbria, UK

            The small wooded island is named for Herbert, the anchorite and friend of St Cuthbert, who lived here in the 7th Century.  Though the largest of Derwentwater's islands, its area is still only ~2 ha.

The steep slope in the background is above Manesty Park on the western bank of Derwentwater; at the top, one would be on the track between Cat Bells and Maiden Moor.

This is the view from the beach in Strandhag Bay, to the immediate south-east of Friar's Crag.  As that name hints, monks visiting Herbert made the ~1 km crossing from here.
