Hodder Valley near Slaidburn, Forest of Bowland, Lancashire, UK

            This is the hazy view west from 180 m asl at the junction between The Skaithe (on the Slaidburn-Bentham road over the moors) and the access road to the dam of Stocks Reservoir.

The stand of trees in the middle of the image, 2.4 km from here is a local landmark, near Laythams on Back Lane. It's also on the (very straight) line of a Roman road: the road from Ribchester passed Longridge Fell and crossed the River Hodder before heading in a very straight line to the start of the Salter Road pass over the moors to Roeburndale, and hence to cross the River Lune at Hornby.  I wonder whether earlier trees on the slight hill  were a landmark for the Romans too.

Behind, the lower hill on the left is Mellor Knoll (344 m), 8 km away at the mouth of the Trough of Bowland. It's effectively a shoulder of Totridge Fell (496 m), filling the horizon 9½ km away. Well, apart from Fair Oak Fell, 10.6 km away at the far left.
