Glossop and Snake Pass, High Peak, Derbyshire, UK

            Looking east whilst climbing from Manchester Airport, this is the view across Hope Forest (open moorland with few trees!), the upland between the main summit plateaux of Bleaklow, off the left of the image, and Kinder Scout (620–636 m) immediately off the right.

Glossop is at lower left, with the A57 main road (Manchester – Sheffield and ultimately Liverpool – Lincoln) leaving the centre of the town to curve around Coldharbour Moor into the heart of the High Peak. Reaching 512 m asl in the straight section just beyond that curve, Snake Pass is commonly closed by winter conditions, despite being the shortest significant route between Manchester and central Sheffield. At the end of the visible section, the road turns right, following Lady Clough and the River Ashop to Ladybower Reservoir, almost visible at the rear right of the image.

The further valley, on the near edge of the low cloud is Alport Dale, a tributary of the River Ashop, draining Hope Forest (the open moorland across the left/middle of the image; no trees!).

The valley behind Glossop, left of Snake Pass, is that of Shelf Brook, draining Shelf Moor. The Romans favoured that route to the moorland plateau, though the Roman road also used Lady Clough for the eastern descent.

At the near right of the image, Coombes Edge and Cown Edge arc around the head of Coombes Rocks.
