Dry waterfall, Lower Ease Gill Kirk, Yorkshire Dales National Park, Cumbria, UK

            Normally dry at this point, Ease Gill Beck can rise alarmingly rapidly in response to storm rainfall onto the surrounding moors, cascading over this lip into an enclosed amphitheatre possibly created by the collapse of a cave roof. As the name suggests, it does have a slight air of being a church ('kirk').

Incidentally, this is Lower Ease Gill Kirk; there's also an Upper Ease Gill Kirk about 500 m upstream, with a smoother 'U'-shaped waterfall lip. I also like the more rugged shapes of this one, including textures cut into the limestone by water and time, and the subtle transitions between surprisingly vivid colours. Note the 'dinosaur head' at the lower left!

Administrative boundaries mean little in such locations, but the stream is a county border: the left of the image is in Cumbria whilst the right is in Lancashire.
