The White Church, Ansdell Road South, Lytham St Annes, Fylde, Lancashire, UK

            In 1899, Lytham Congregational Church decided that the growing local population justified the construction of a new building, on land leased from the Clifton family of Lytham Hall.

Designed by the Blackburn architects Briggs, Wolstenholme and Thornley in a 'Free Byzantine' style, the church opened in 1912 (eight years after its red brick church hall, at the left). The octagonal minaret tower and faience exterior immediately made it a local landmark between Lytham and St. Annes-on-the-Sea; I'm sure more people know it as 'The White Church' than could readily recall which denomination is based there.  In fact, it's now Fairhaven United Reformed Church, the result of the Congregationalists merging with the Presbyterian Church of England in 1972.

The other buildings in view are typical of the sea front: over-designed Mock Tudor villas and oddly Mediterranean apartment complexes.

The foreground is the fringe of grass-stabilised sand dunes between the edge of the estuary and the town.
