Worcester Boer War Memorial, College Yard, Worcester, Worcestershire, UK

            This large bronze statue outside the Cathedral depicts a soldier of the Worcester Regiment kneeling with rifle in 'ready' position ("as he prepares to fire his last cartridge", as one source proposes), enveloped by the wings of 'Victory' (again, one source says 'Immortality'), who in turn bears a palm branch and laurel-draped sword.  As the soldier's dress suggests, this is the Worcester Boer War Memorial, commemorating those killed in the South African War of 1899-1902.  Now Grade II* Listed, it was designed by William Robert Colton RA and unveiled in 1908 by Lt.Gen. the Hon. Sir N.G. Lyttelton.

I'm not sure what I think of the monument: it's a fine example of New Sculpture, dating from well before the ~1921 peak of British memorial statuary, but its triumphalism at the 'martyrdom' of a soldier is disturbingly dated; that attitude wouldn't survive the First World War.
