War Memorial, Queen's Parade Place, Bath, Somerset, UK

            These lions are old friends – I've also encountered them on the railings of the Law Society and the Natural History Museum in London and around another war memorial in Leicester.
They were designed in 1852 by Alfred Stevens for low railings outside the British Museum; though those railings were removed in 1896, the lions were used extensively elsewhere – both the original castings and copies made later. As a design classic resolving the problem of how to portray a lion on such a narrow base, examples of Stevens' Lion are held by the collections of both the British Museum and the V&A.
Not counting those museum pieces, Bath's lions may be the bext examples I've seen, free of the generations of overpainting elsewhere.

Designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield RA and featuring the Cross of Sacrifice he designed in 1918 for the Imperial War Graves Commission, Bath's main war memorial stands just off Royal Avenue at the Rivers Gate entrance to Victoria Park.

A Roll of Honour on bronze panels lists 1,172 names of those lost in the First World War, 602 in the Second World War and 16 in other 20th Century conflicts. In addition to those who served in the armed forces, civil defence and special constabulary, mention is made of 402 civilians killed during the 'Bath Blitz', the three German 'Baedeker Raids' of 25–27 April 1942.

The memorial was unveiled in 1927 in the presence of Blomfield, Viscount Allenby and the Bishop of Bath and Wells; the name plates had previously been displayed at the Royal Mineral Water Hospital. The Second World War plates seem to have been added as late as 1995 (though that may be a typo in the IWM's record - would 1945 have been too soon for a finalised list to have been available?).
The memorial was rededicated in 2010, when two lead planters were added to commemorate Harry Patch (1898-2009) who, at 111, had been Europe's oldest man and the 'the last fighting Tommy' of the First World War.
