Looking into Carlin Gill, Howgill Fells, Yorkshire Dales National Park, Cumbria, UK

            It's difficult for a photo to demonstrate the scale of the steep slopes lining the upper end of Carlin Gill (and most other Howgill valleys), but the trees beside Carlingill Beck are indeed tree-sized – they're not huge, but they're not bushes!
If geomorphologists need large, uniform, inclined planes on which to empirically test their theoretical models, these might suffice!

The very flat, sunlit slope in the middle of the image ascends ~125 m from the Beck to the ridgetop at the left edge of the image, maintaining a 1-in-1.76 incline for a horizontal distance of 220 m.  Beginning a climb (which quickly becomes a stagger) from the wooded channel side, the destination looks a long way away... and, typically, the end of the flat section isn't the top, beyond a further, teasingly convex slope.

The headscar of the Black Force cascade waterfall (note the tightly-folded strata) defines the near end of the planar slope, with Small Gill at the far end.  The next gully in the side of Knowles is Haskaw Gill; rising from its confluence with Carlingill Beck is the track diagonally crossing Back Balk to Carlingill Bridge (and my transport home!).

The slopes on the right side of Carlin Gill rise towards Uldale Head, with Blease Fell at the end, overlooking the main valley of the River Lune and accompanying M6 motorway; Greyrigg Pike is on the other side.  The background is in the Lake District National Park - which reminds me: the left side of Carlin Gill is part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, but not the right: the Beck is the boundary.
