red crossbill - male - a photo on Flickriver

            Fairly large flocks of these aptly named red crossbills are showing up here ( West Kootenays BC ) lately but the carnage along the local highways is  quite significant. These birds seem to like feeding on the road salt and ice.. If you see large numbers of these unique birds on the road please lean on your horn. It's actually quite effective as the whole flock will fly away
