66 597 'Viridor' approaching Wimbledon

            Having just climbed up the steady gradient from the direction of Haydons Road station Freightliner's class 66 diesel locomotive 66 597 'Viridor' gently accelerates its train of aggregates wagons towards the bi-directional platform 9 at Wimbledon station on its southerly journey with the 755S Acton Yard to Tolworth working. West of Wimbledon station the train will cross over from the Sutton Local line tracks to the LSWR Main Line tracks in order to reach Raynes Park, Motspur Park and Tolworth. On the left of the photo is the former 1930s Southern Railway Wimbledon 'A' signalbox, now in use as a storeroom facility while on the right is the former track bed which used to serve platform 10 at Wimbledon station prior to platform 10 being used as the terminus platform for the Croydon Tramlink since May 2000. As there is no physical track connection between the Brighton Main Line and the LSWR main line at Clapham Junction the only place where trains from the Brighton Main Line can cross over to the LSWR main line is at Wimbledon West Junction.
