Arrival in Leadville. - a photo on Flickriver

            The archaic bulk of GP9 1714 is seen as it is about to enter the station at Leadville. This loco is part of a small but growing group of diesels that have now spent more time in preservation than on the mainline. It was built in 1955 and withdrawn from Burlington Northern in 1987. 

One of the claims to fame of the city of Leadville is that at 10,152 feet in altitude it has the highest elevation of any incorporated city in the United States. With nearby access to some of the largest hills in Colorado it attracts hikers, skiers and tourists who want to get away from modern civilisation. We also bumped into a few locals who had visited the area many years ago and simply stayed. At that altitude nothing happens quickly and the city has a sedate  quirky olde worlde feel to it.
