In 1831, after visiting Paris, John Strang, Chamberlain at the Merchant’s House, proposed the idea that the Fir Park was admirably adapted to the model of a “Père la Chaise” cemetery adjacent to the Glasgow Cathedral. In 1832, The Cemetery Act was passed in Britain allowing burial for profit. Before the act, the parish church held full responsibility for burying the dead. The Victorian Glasgow Necropolis was officially inaugurated in 1833.  Approximately 50,000 burials have taken place at the 37-acre necropolis and the 3,500 monuments of every architectural style were designed by major architects and sculptors of the time. In 1966, the Merchant’s House gave the Necropolis to Glasgow. Visiting this Victorian garden cemetery offers wonderful architecture, superb sculptures, and a great overview of the cathedral. The 360° views across Glasgow from the hill summit are fantastic.

En 1832, le Cemetery Act a été adopté en Grande-Bretagne permettant l'inhumation à des fins lucratives. Avant l'acte, l'église paroissiale avait l'entière responsabilité de l'enterrement des morts. La nécropole victorienne de Glasgow a été officiellement inaugurée en 1833. Environ 50 000 enterrements ont eu lieu dans la nécropole de 37 acres et les 3 500 monuments de tous les styles architecturaux ont été conçus par les principaux architectes et sculpteurs de l'époque. En 1966, la Merchant’s House a donné la nécropole à la ville de Glasgow. La visite de ce cimetière de jardin victorien offre une architecture magnifique, des sculptures et un excellent aperçu de la cathédrale. Les points de vue de 360 ° sur Glasgow depuis le sommet de la colline sont fantastiques.
