Le trèfle pied de lièvre - a photo on Flickriver

                Hauteur 

    10–30 cm
    Fleur 

    Corolle irrégulière (zygomorphe), 4–6 mm. Cinq pétales blancs rougeâtres : Le pétale dressé représentant un étendard, les deux latéraux des ailes, et les deux inférieurs sont réunis pour former une carène. Forme générale de la corolle rappelant un papillon. Cinq sépales, réunis, soyeux-velus, lobes du calice à pointe longue et élancée. Carpelle unique. Dix étamines. Inflorescence à capitule ovoïde, jusqu’à 25 mm de long.
    Feuilles 

    Alternes. Trifoliolées, à folioles étroites et elliptiques, dentelées, 0,6–2 cm de long. Stipules unies au pétiole.
    Fruit 

    Cosse indéhiscente incluse dans le calice.
    Habitat 

    Prairies sèches, rocailles, bords de routes, orées des champs.
    Période de floraison 

    Juin–juillet.

Le trèfle pied-de-lièvre est une annuelle droite élancée à poils gris. Son calice est nettement plus long que la corolle.

En Finlande, c’est un archéophyte qui a tiré profit des activités humaines. Sa distribution semble correspondre aux lieux habités au Moyen Âge. La plante a été utilisée comme plante médicinale pour le traitement des affections humaines et animales.

Le trèfle pied-de-lièvre pousse généralement dans des clairières de coteaux boisés. En Finlande, il apparaît également comme une plante dite de ballast, et le long des voies ferrées comme une exotique occasionnelle. Le trèfle pied-de-lièvre est une espèce menacée à l’échelle régionale.
