1 Maple and 1 Feather - a photo on Flickriver

            Those who have seen the award-winning film Billy Elliot will remember this scene. Billy is as surprised as anyone to have received an invitation to audition for a scholarship to one of the world’s most prestigious schools for classical ballet, London’s Royal Ballet School. For a host of reasons, Billy is a long shot as a candidate and his audition before the august review panel is an unqualified disaster. Billy can’t dance in such an intimidating situation. He is too self-conscious. Billy’s father is up and out the door and on his way back to the “Thatcher” coal miners’ strike in the north of England. Billy, gathering up his things, is not far behind him. But just then there comes a spontaneous question from one of the panel. Perhaps she intuits something in Billy and tries to think of a question that might draw him out: “Can I ask you just one more question, Billy? What does it feel like when you’re dancing?” Billy turns around, takes a few seconds to gather his thoughts, and comes out with a hopeless: “Dunno.” But he continues, haltingly, “It sort of feels good. It’s sort of stiff and that. But once I get going, I like forget everything and I sort of disappear. I sort of disappear.” With this answer he captures the attention of the panel. Billy returns to County Durham in the north of England. After an anxious time of waiting, the letter from the Royal Ballet School finally arrives. Billy is accepted. 

That final question at the end of the audition allowed him to show that he had already discovered the inner skill of abandon to the deeply freeing demands of the discipline of dance.
