            One of natures natural abstracts. I didn't post process this picture and yet it looks like I did. Anyhow, I was looking down...yes the vast world that we fail to notice...right under our feet. Such beauty...such color...so delicate.

In 1959, the late and great Japanese Buddhist scholar Dr. D. T. Suzuki engaged the Catholic monk Thomas Merton in a dialogue on Buddhism and Christianity. Suzuki ended it by saying to Merton: “Tom, you are a typical Western dualist. The only outside chance you have of grasping Zen is to study your one Zen thinker of the West, Meister Eckhart.” “But Eckhart was condemned by the church,” responded Merton. “Well, I can’t help that, can I?” answered Suzuki. Merton thought it over, and the next year he devoted himself to doing just two things: 1) reading Eckhart and 2) reading Zen poetry. With that work, his entire life changed and surely his theology. Merton moved from being an essentially romantic and dualistic Augustinian monk to a contemplative activist and deep ecumenist. This is clear in all his subsequent writings, such as Confessions of a Guilty Bystander, Mystics and Zen Masters, Zen and the Birds of Appetite, and much more. In his last book, Asian Journal, he wrote in the margins of his journal, “Eckhart is my lifeboat, Eckhart is my lifeboat.”
