            The T&T was built by Borax Smith, who tried everything to get borax transported from the rich but remote Lila C mine on the edge of Death Valley.

The railroad looked like it would prosper, but was undercut by a cheating U.S. senator, and again by the discovery of huge borate deposits closer to civilization.  Eventually, Smith added the passenger cars you see here, in hopes of transporting tourists to Death Valley. But the automobile, the Great Depression and World War II defeated the T&T for good.

Though it’s been over 70 years since the tracks were pulled and scrapped for the war effort, you can still walk sections of the right of way, including spectacular Amargosa Canyon where there have been many flash floods.
  
These old deep desert trains stopped for anyone who flagged them down.   Burromen frequently did so to fill their barrels with drinking water, which was always given free. The T&T passed a few places where the bitter water of the Amargosa River flowed at the surface. Its crews were known for stopping and skinny dipping.
