Birch, with bark peeling - a photo on Flickriver

            For most of my early life, our mailing address was "Birchwood, Wisconsin." (We were on a rural route out of the Birchwood post office.) I went to high school in the Birchwood school, in that town. The town is well named. There are lots of birch trees growing nearby. I believe that the species is Betula papyrifera, paper birch. While walking around the place where I spent most of my boyhood, on a visit to Wisconsin, I noted this birch tree, with some bark peeled off. Most likely no one tore it off, but it just came off naturally. One reason that this kind of tree is called "paper birch" is that you can use the bark layers, torn off, to write on.

I believe that the brown horizontal spots are lenticels -- structures which allow Oxygen to come into the bark cells, and Carbon Dioxide to depart. You can see lenticels on twigs of many kinds of trees, but they are particularly prominent in this kind.
