cloudy with a chance of pumpkins - a photo on Flickriver

            This is probably what we'll be doing tomorrow... picking out pumpkins in the rain. 

Rather recently, Henry (my eldest) complained of needing his umbrella because it was misting out. I explained to him that, as an Oregonian, he was naturally adapted to go out walking in mist and rain without an umbrella. Mind you, he did have waterproof raingear on and spent last year in outdoor preschool... but the kid definitely has a preference for heat and warm weather.

I was surprised, and intrigued, by how readily the "Oregonian" logic appealed to him. The very next day he used the same line on me, proudly stating that "we are Oregonians". 

It made me marvel at how willfully, longingly, and sometimes desperately we all want to belong to our own, special, "groups" of people... how we identify with those people, how we view the reflection of ourselves through them, and even how we unfortunately generalize and stereotype both our "own" groups and those we don't feel that we fit into. 

And there's an entirely different but related level to this line of thinking - how we impart our own values to our children (both intentionally and not), and the ethical and moral implications when we do so.

But. It's after midnight, and so I'll leave those tantalizing discussions for another day.
