Marc Quinn vit et travaille à Londres où il est né en 1964. Avec The Origin of the World (Cassis Madagascariensis) Indian Ocean, 310, Marc Quinn présente un coquillage en bronze, haut de trois mètres, reproduit de façon réaliste. Le titre se réfère à l'image emblématique de L'Origine du Monde de Gustave Courbet (1866). L’artiste invite le spectateur à percevoir la sculpture comme un symbole monumental du sexe féminin. A travers ses peintures et ses sculptures, Marc Quinn assume des clins d’oeil à l’histoire de l’art. L’artiste évoque volontiers La naissance de Vénus de Sandro Botticelli (c.1485), qui représente la déesse de l’amour née de l’écume de la mer et semblant sortir d’un coquillage. Contemporain d’une époque perturbée, l'oeuvre illustre le besoin de se retirer dans un environnement clos et protecteur se traduisant par une esthétique aux formes rondes et douces.
