The California tour continued on. To sum up the trip for anyone new reading this. I left Pittsburgh two weeks prior to this set. I arrived in southern California and hiked Joshua Tree, saw LA, drove the entire Big Sur and Highway One numerous times in a few days, took in the awesome Hearst Castle and walked across the Golden Gate Bridge. The next stop was to head further north and see the amazing Redwood forests!
Upon arriving at Redwoods our first mission was to grab a campsite, out of a stroke of luck we decided on getting the Gold Bluffs Beach campground, our site was right on the edge of the Pacific and I have to say it was probably one of the best camp sites I have ever had. It took a dirt road, twenty five minutes, and some awesome sight seeing just to get to our site, no service whatsoever. We also had that amazing "mysterious" fog that sort of just surrounded the campground giving it an eerie but cool feeling to it. We set up camp and decided to do a few hikes.
A lot of people get the notion that Redwoods is just that...Redwoods, maybe a giant forest they picture in their heads. But it really is so much more, you can whale watch in the park, probably something a lot of people don't realize. On top of that the wildlife in the park was spectacular. We saw just about everything you can see ranging from the huge banana slugs, to black bear and elk, and even a sea otter or two. Like I stated earlier though, its not just about the trees. In my opinion the real gem of the park were the high overlooks you had looking out into the Pacific for what seemed hundreds of miles.
Hiking trails in the park are generally on the easier side, I felt like we did a good portion of the trails in the few days we had in the area, but they all are pretty amazing in their own regards, whether your looking up at the redwood giants or staring out into the abyss of the Pacific, they have trails for everyone. Now lets get to some photos!
