Storming the Citadel - a photo on Flickriver

            Castle Rock is part of an ancient extinct volcano which was formed 350 million years ago during the carboniferous period. Historical accounts suggest there was a settlement on the site of Castle Rock as early as the 2nd century. Named “Aluana” which would stand for “rock place,” perhaps this is the earliest known name for Castle Rock.

Edinburgh Castle itself is so old that by the time it was first mentioned in literature, it was already a fortress shrouded in myth and legend. One such legend associates the name of the castle with Arthurian legend and the “Cult of the Nine Maidens.” According to the story, the site once stood as a shrine and belonged to one of the nine sisters, namely the powerful sorceress Morgan la Fey

Looking at it today, as it stands dominating the Edinburgh skyline, it is all to easy to imagine a time in the distant past when dark clouds gathering overhead were viewed with superstitious fear, and attributed to powerful Tempestarii - powerful witches and warlocks who, it was believed, possessed the power to raise or quell storms at will
