Schopfkarakara - Southern crested caracara

            Der Schopfkarakara ist ein falkenartiger Vogel aus dem mittleren und südlichen Südamerika. Anders als die Falken ist der Schopfkarakara kein schnell fliegender Jäger, sondern verbringt viel Zeit am Boden. Mit seinen langen Beinen und Zehen ist er gut ans Laufen in offenen Lebensräumen angepasst. Zur Beute gehören Wirbellose, Reptilien, Amphibien, sowie gelegentlich kleine Vögel und Säugetiere.

The southern crested caracara is a bird of prey in the family Falconidae. As presently defined, the southern crested caracara is restricted to central and southern South America. 
A bold, opportunistic raptor, the southern crested caracara is often seen walking around on the ground looking for food. It mainly feeds on carcasses of dead animals, but will steal food from other raptors, raid bird nests, it may also eat fruit.
