The Funeral

            Tombstones are the most common of all remains surviving from Roman times  and not far from the fort of Bremenium, located at what is now Rochester, was a large graveyard flanking the road.

If you were rich, funerals were an elaborate affair and the scene above depicts such an event. From left to right is the funeral director (Dissignator), a lyre player, a hired mourner (Praeficae), slaves carrying the lectus funebris and family mourners.
