Evening Grosbeak -- Male (Cocothraustes vespertinus); Santa Fe National Forest, NM, Thompson Ridge [Lou Feltz]

            This striking Grosbeak species is usually a target bird for birders accessing this mountain altitude from the lower portions of New Mexico. They are readily recognizable by their oversized bills. This perspective shows all of the fieldmarks you need for a confident ID. These birds are seasonally regular at this altitude (8600 ft. msl), but not predictable. Some may winter over at slightly lower altitudes, more likely on southern slopes. They often appear in moderate sized flocks... they're quite gregarious. If they are anywhere in the general area they invariably show up here in groups to access our created bird oasis, announcing their arrival with distinctive high-pitched clipped chirps.
