Study in Light and Shade - a photo on Flickriver

            The view here is of one of the three arches of the Ross Bridge from the north side. If you enlarge the shot you'll get some indication of the intricate stone work involved. Archer's design, skillfully brought into existence by the engineering and stonemasonry skills of James Colbeck, and topped off with those extraordinary carvings of Daniel Herbert.

Only two men are actually named on this bridge. Lt. Gov. George Arthur (we'll meet him), and Captain William Turner, Commandant of Ross. If you enlarge this photograph you can clearly see his name inscribed at the top of the right hand pillar. This was carved beautifully by Daniel Herbert, convict.

Both these men became unlikely, but real friends. The well educated officer from the 50th Queens Own Regiment, and the convict artisan with a radical outlook on life. It's a lovely story, and may well explain how Daniel Herbert got away with the proverbial "murder" of the British Empire in his highly symbolic and provocative carvings.

Here's just one example already in this photograph. I've tagged the relevant icons. On the right hand side we see the image of Gov. Arthur as a Puritan divine (he was a very devout Evangelical Anglican) and under him we can make out a death mask (skull). In the same position on the left hand side of the arch is a well worn face representing an Aborigine. We are meant to read them together as a pair. It was under Gov. Arthur's administration (1823-1837) that the Aborigines were driven off the land and all but exterminated. Light and shade. Talk about explosive political comment of the time!

We must find out more about who Daniel Herbert was, and what he stood for.
