Il Cirneco dell'Etna è la più antica razza di cani italiani perché da quasi tremila anni rivela la sua presenza in Sicilia.Il Cirneco dell'Etna è' un cane primitivo, cioè un animale che non è stato frutto di un progetto e di una successiva selezione programmata da parte dell'uomo come invece è avvenuto per la maggior parte delle razze presenti nel panorama internazionale; la selezione del Cirneco dell'Etna è stata fatta prevalentemente dalla natura, dall'ambiente e dall'uso che ne è stato fatto. E' dunque un cane di origine selvatica, fa parte di un insieme di razze da caccia molto simili tra di loro e provenienti tutte dal bacino del mediterraneo dove si sono evolute a partire dall'età Faraonica.Degli studi hanno accertato l'incrocio fra cani domestici ed il lupo abissino.Si formò così un ceppo di cani, le cui forme le troviamo raffigurate nelle tombe egizie e in rappresentazioni artistiche di vario genere,cani duttili perché non erano espressione solo di velocità ma avevano acquisito anche capacità di cercare e scovare la selvaggina e quindi più adatti alla selvaggina locale di mole inferiore e ai terreni meno ampi. Intorno al 1000 a.C. incominciò il grande viaggio al di la del mediterraneo e principalmante attraverso due vie: la prima verso l'Asia minore, ed il Mar Nero fino in Russia,la seconda attraverso il Mediterraneo per opera dei Fenici che diffusero questo cane in tutta l'Europa meridionale.In Sicilia questi cano mediorientale furono introdotti proprio dai Fenici,poi la selezione naturale forgiò sulle lave dell'Etna lo splendido Cirneco.Razze simili si trovano a Malta,Spagna e Portigallo.

The Cirneco dell'Etna is a small breed of dog originally from Sicily. This hound was historically used to hunt rabbits and can work for hours without food or water.The breed also has a keen sense of smell and is primarily built for endurance over harsh terrain such as that of Mount Etna. It is the smallest of the Mediterranean island hunting hounds, the others being the Pharaoh Hounds and Ibizan Hounds.Today they are increasingly kept for the sport of conformation showing and as pets, due to their low coat maintenance and friendly nature, although as an active hound they do need regular exercise. A Cirneco should measure from 43-51 cm (17-20in) and weigh between 10–12 kg (22-26lb). As with other breeds, those from hunting stock can lie outside these ranges.
