Eurybia nicaeus erythinosa - a photo on Flickriver

            I saw many fantastic butterflies on the trip, but this definitely is a contender for my favourite of the entire trip.
I had never heard of this group previuosly, but they were not rare in this locality. They generally settle underneath leaves and so can display their colours without it being obvious. This was easily my best photo of any of them. Often they were very low to the ground and it was very hard to get an unobscured photo or see what the camera was seeing.
I am absolutely delighted with this photo. It is a shame in real life you would not get this view as you would be looking at the top of the leaf.
This species occurs in primary rainforest at elevations between about 200-800m. The butterflies are never seen in open sunlit areas, instead preferring the darkness of the forest understorey. Periodically they dash out to investigate other butterflies, but instantly return to settle under another nearby leaf. The speed of flight is extraordinary, and the degree of agility apparent when they fly into the vegetation, flip upside-down and settle under a leaf is quite amazing to behold.
