            I spent a week near the end of 2019 in Costa Rica, took (does complicated math on a whiteboard), maybe ten photos. One polaroid, this one. 

As I get older, and more comfortable (both in my own skin and walking through the world), I don’t require a camera as much. I still love taking pictures, but I don’t need them to document an experience, and perhaps the ubiquity of photographs in our modern world is a part of that. 

I spent that week surfing and eating and drinking and meeting people and marveling at sunsets the likes of which I’d never seen before. Being offered cocaine and prostitutes as I walked to dinner. Turning my life into interesting stories for dinner companions. Riding waves twice the size I was used to. 

Taking pictures would’ve gotten in the way of those experiences, that was my feeling at the time. 

But looking back...I should've taken more pictures! I took this one of Steven, but what about the other friends I made there? What about Craig from Huntington Beach, who had been to the surf camp 8 previous times? Who knew all the good spots to eat and drink? 

What about the lady I met on the plane there, who ended up going to the same camp I was at? We had dinner together that first night, kept hanging out during the week, she was great! A real cool lady. 

Or the waitress Craig was friends with at that Argentinian barbecue place? Or our surf guide, Chanty? 

This photo...it's doing a lot of work, holding all those memories for me. Next trip...next trip I'll do it right.
