Great Central Railway Loughborough Leicestershire 3rd January 2011

            A reboot from almost 14 years ago after a few tweaks and a recrop.

It's 09.13 and we are due off shed by 09.30. Great Western Railway Small Prairie 2-6-2T 5526 stands ahead of the pit on shed road 1. Don the cleaner has done a fine job and all I have to do now is remove the STOP board.

I like GWR engines I have to confess and 5526 is a brilliant looking and effective loco but Swindon didn't necessarily make life easy for its footplate crews. A simple example is that front step. I am 6 foot tall but reaching up  to that single step takes an effort. For anyone more vertically-challenged it's mountaineering! Why not have two steps? Having said that most GWR tender locos don't have any steps! You have to shuffle round from the cab on the running plate...
