Leicester Midland 2nd November 1988

            For the railway enthusiasts of Leicester the "Birdcage" off Swain Street is hallowed ground. By the time I got there the view over the engine shed was all BR Blue diesel. 

The first scene in this video shows Class 56 diesel 56058 moving about the shed & looking down on the cab gives an idea how good the view from the Birdcage was. Nose-to-nose Class 20s 20124 & 20054 pass the yard with its line of withdrawn Peaks all destined for Vic Berry's scrapyard. They included 45026, 46023, 45001 & 45004. Walking round the path from the Birdcage gives good views of locos in the yard including Class 47 47002 and Departmental 97480. 

Walking back to Swain Street bridge and another favourite spotter's location; standing on the raised spars of the bridge gave a good view of London Road station where parcels were being unloaded from HST 43106. Panning the camera around shows the extent of the railway infrastructure here.

A new view on the shed was opened up when the extensive Down side goods facilities at St Georges were demolished and I walked down (behind the fence!) to get detailed shots of the withdrawn Peaks. Northbound HST 43111 passes me on the way and on the Up side the modern signalling centre built by the site of Leicester's roundhouse can be seen.

Passing the Birdcage 56042(?) comes on shed and 56070 goes off being passed by another HST heading south. The final sequence is a panorama of the remains of the goods yard.

Today the Birdcage footpath is still there but the actual "cage" has been removed and the uncontrolled tree and weed growth almost completely masks the view which is a shame because the UK Rail Leasing depot is as busy as ever. The goods yard is now the St Georges Retail Park and there is no view of the railway.
