Great Central Railway Leicester 1st July 1984

            Fourteen years after the ex-GCR main line to London through Leicester closed to all traffic Leicester City Council opened the Great Central Way, a bike & pedestrian path from Duns Lane near the city centre south to the county at Glen Parva.

In July 1984 I made my first visit to the path and this short video records the section from Evesham Road to Upperton Road & Vic Berry's. 

After the view of the 1983 information board there is a brief scene taken on the Burton branch showing the junction with the last remaining rail connection to the GCR in Leicester. This was a chord opened in 1965 and connected to Vic Berry's scrapyard opened in 1973 at Braunstone Gate, previously the site of Braunstone Gate Goods Yard.

A panorama follows of the goods yard throat, former GCR wagon repair shop and the ex-main line to London, on which Great Central Way was built, all spanned by the impressive Upperton Road bridge. From under that bridge the camera swings round to show the scene looking southwards.

The first movement of locomotives to Leicester for scrap took place at the end of October 1986 when Goole was cleared of its stored locomotives but prior to that Berry's scrapped many electric and diesel multiple units. In 1984 the famous stack was made up of British Rail Class 414 (2HAP) third-rail emus withdrawn from the Southern Region in 1982. Identified among them were 6069, 6107, 6122 & 6143.
