Buxton station, Derbyshire February 1970

            A reprocessed and cropped version of an earlier posting prompted by the report of snow in Buxton today - a regular occurrence in this part of the Midlands.

A green-liveried Class 40 is seen backing off Buxton diesel shed.  At the time I noted this as D236 but I have just noticed that it has a nameplate and 236 wasn't named and it can't be 226 because that wasn't named either. After checking the negative again I now know it is actually D235 Apapa, the last named 40. It was built in 1959 by Vulcan Foundry, named in 1962, renumbered 40035 in 1973 and withdrawn in 1984.

The gas lamp, running-in board and curve of the snow covered platform in the foreground indicate where trains taking the long-closed ex-LNWR Ashbourne line once stood.
