The Small Crack in the Rock - a photo on Flickriver

            Once it was part of a mighty mountain, strong, proud, and unshakable. But one day, a small boulder tumbled down and landed deep below. It cracked. Disappointed, full of anger and shame, it lay there, alone and useless, as it thought.
Years passed. Rain fell, the sun warmed, and one day, from the small crack, a flower grew. Delicate, yet full of life.

"Thank you, dear rock," it whispered. "Without your crack, I would never have been able to take root. Every drop of water you hold, every ray of light you gather, gives me life."

The rock was silent. No one had ever thanked it for anything.
It began to change not externally, but deep within.
It suddenly saw beauty in what it was; not broken, it was just a little "open" to new life.
As he lay there with the flower on his crack, he realized that contentment doesn't grow in size, it grows in giving. And gratitude is often rooted in pain.

And the flower?

The beautiful flower bloomed all the more magnificently, attracting bees and other small insects, and thus a small, living microcosm grew around the rock. From then on, the little rock was no longer sad. He understood that there was more to the word "giving" than he ever imagined.
