Deux femmes Monpa

            Tawang, état d'Arunachal Pradesh, Inde

Les deux femmes ont mis leur belle tenue traditionnelle pour assister à la fête organisée par l'armée, très présente dans cette partie de l'Inde toujours sous tension car revendiquée par la Chine. Cette "fête de l'amitié entre l'armée et la population " où tous les régiments ont revêtu leur plus bel uniforme, est l'occasion de réjouissances et de danses improvisées mais aussi, pour la population,  de consultations médicales dans un dispensaire de toile installé par les militaires, où hommes et femmes se pressent en une longue file.

Les Monpa (ou Momba) constituent un groupe ethnique proche des Tibétains vivant principalement dans l'Arunachal Pradesh, en particulier dans la région de Tawang , ainsi qu'au Tibet et au Bhoutan.
Hommes et femmes portent encore parfois le chapeau de feutre traditionnel en poil de yak noir à cinq pointes effilées . Les femmes portent une belle veste brodée  sur une robe généralement rose rayée, avec une longue pièce étroite de tissu entourant leurs reins Les hommes portent un manteau rouge ceint également d'une pièce de tissu.
Les Monpa sont en général des adeptes du bouddhisme tibétain
Ils pratiquent la culture en terrasse - leurs cultures principales sont le riz, le maïs, le blé, la citrouille, les haricots, le tabac et le coton - et l’élevage (yaks, vaches, cochons, volailles) 

Tawang est une bourgade de l'Inde himalayenne, à proximité de la Chine et du Bouthan, à près de 3000 m d'altitude, dans l'aire du bouddhisme tibétain. Rattachée au Tibet jusqu'en 1914, elle fait, comme toute la région, l'objet de convoitises de la part de la Chine. Il en résulte une forte présence militaire dont l'une des conséquences positives est l'existence de routes stratégiques qui permettent un accès relativement aisé à ce village du bout du monde.
