My Lego Spitfire Vs BM Zero Fighter - a photo on Flickriver

RAAF Spitfire VCs did meet the Japanese Zero fighters in 1943, in the skies over Darwin, Australia, where apparently they (Spitfires) were soundly trashed by the Zeroes in the early stages. Nevertheless, with lessons learnt and new tactics, the Spitfires did later hold their own against the Japanese fighters.

From my reading, there are a number of theories explaining this. Firstly, the Spitfire pilots were overconfident, because of the successes of Spitfires in Battle of Britain and European Theatre of War. However the Zero fighter (especially the upgraded Model 32) was actually superior in maneuverability and acceleration at medium altitudes (below 20,000feet) allowing them to keep within gun range when chasing a Spitfire. The Zero's stalling speed was lower than a Spitfire's, so they could escape a trailing Spitfire by doing a vertical loop or tight turn. So in a close-in low speed , medium altitude dogfight, the Zero outclassed the Spitfires.

The best tactic for Spitfires would be a high speed attack dive from a high altitude then zoom climb to prepare for next attack. This is similar to the very successful tactic employed by the P40 "Flying Tigers" developed by Claire Lee Chennault, against Japanese Zeroes in China.
