44871 and 45407 "The Lancashire Fusilier", Shap. 30.12.2009.

            44871 was previously named Sovereign and was built at Crewe Works in March 1945. It remained in service until the end of steam and was one of the locomotives that took part in the "15 Guinea Special" to commemorate the end of mainline steam on the 11th August 1968. It is now owned by Ian Riley and is normally based at the East Lancashire Railway, although as operational and mainline certified, it regularly provides motive power for the Jacobite steam trains between Fort William and Mallaig. 
Following purchase by Ian Riley in 2006, 44871 was overhauled and returned to the mainline at the end of 2009 and undertook loaded test runs / rail charters, double headed with 45407, as depicted here.
45407 was named "The Lancashire Fusilier" on entering preservation. It was built byArmstrong Whitworth in Newcastle in September 1937. It too worked until the end of steam and is also owned by Ian Riley and normally based at the East Lancashire Railway, although it also regularly provides motive power for the Jacobite steam trains between Fort William and Mallaig.
