            Tuiliere and Sanadoire rocks

Both of these rocks come from two volcanoes which their profiles have been sharply eroded by glaciers. They used to be part of the Sancy/Monts Dore block.

Only the chimney (Tuilière) and a part of the cone (Sanadoire) are left, separated by a U-shaped valley.  They show the limit between the Monts Dore and the Banne d’Ordanche massive and emerge in the “cirque du Chausse” at the foot of the col du Guéry. They border the Fontsalade valley and are formed by 2 lava bases which were relieved by the glacier.

The regular prism, created by the drop in temperature of the lava, is cleaving in thin and regular plates called “Lauze”. It was exploited over a long period of time to cover the roof of houses and churches, giving its name to the Roche Tuilière (1290m high) since “tuile” stands for tile in English.  Quarries have now been left out/abandoned for more than a century.

The Roche Sanadoire (1290m high) or « sounding rock » is named that way because the phonolite stone rings out when you hit it. Medieval texts are testifying that a castle used to be on the top/on the summit. It was a hideout for mercenaries, leaded by the English who devastated the region during the 100 years’ war. It is now totally destroyed, , maybe because of the hearth crack of 1477 which has marked the region and even damaged the Orcival Basilica.
