1.) Longwood Gardens is home to one the worlds largest green houses

Longwood Gardens second and largest conservatory, opened in 1921, is one of the world's great greenhouse structures. The conservatory alone is home to 4,600 types of plants and trees. Since its original construction began in 1919, it has undergone expansions and renovations.

2.) Longwood Gardens is a really big deal (like really)!

1.) It is one of the premier horticultural display gardens in the United States and is open to visitors year-round to enjoy exotic plants and horticulture (both indoor and outdoor), events and performances, seasonal and themed attractions, as well as educational lectures, courses, and workshops.

3.) It's kind of a tax haven for the past owner, Pierre du Pont.

In 1913, the government had enacted personal income tax. In response, Pierre (who owned the Longwood Gardens privately) incorporated Longwood Gardens in 1914. He always tried to stay one step ahead of the IRS to keep his farm and gardens in the best possible tax situation, and in 1937 the Longwood Foundation was created to handle his charitable giving. Finally, in 1946, the government gave approval for the Foundation to operate Longwood Gardens as a public garden with tax-exempt status "for the sole use of the public for purposes of exhibition, instruction, education and enjoyment."
