CMQ 9023 at Brant, AB - a photo on Flickriver

            A pair of Central Maine and Quebec SD40-2Fs lead an empty ballast train over the crossing just west of Brant. 

The stretch of road from here to Aldersyde (where I had shot it before here) is perhaps one of the most stressful parts of chasing a train on the Aldersyde sub. The tracks formed the hypotenuse of a right triangle—a very rough one—with the two roads you had to take so, depending where you shot, it was always a gamble if you’d beat it across the tracks. On this day I made it just barely; the crossing lights came on just as I cleared the tracks. If you were shooting at Brant though, which I was, you weren’t done yet; you then also had to beat it down a 5 km stretch of dirt road. It was breathing down my neck nearly the entire way and I didn’t think I’d make it but it seemed to slow down a little bit and I made it across with about 20 seconds to spare. This would be the end of my luck though; thanks to painfully slow drivers and, as always, my sheer incompetence, I’d arrive in Vulcan a few seconds too late for the shot I wanted there.
