Tanke schön II

Pfungstadt West wurde 1954 als erste Tank- und Rastanlage nach dem Krieg errichtet und steht heute unter Denkmalschutz.

Die vom Darmstädter Architekturprofessor Ernst Neufert entwickelte Formensprache stand ganz in der funktionalistischen Tradition des Weimarer Bauhauses. Das Beton-Flachdach ruhte auf acht schlanken, nach oben kegelförmig auslaufenden Kapitellen aus armiertem Beton. Der weiße Anstrich erinnerte an die Leuna-Tankstellen der 1930er-Jahre. Die ebenfalls mit Flachdach versehenen und großzügig verglasten Tankstellengebäude wurden bewusst vom Bereich der Zapfsäulen abgesetzt.
