Just Like Heaven

            Just like Heaven, as Robert Smith might say.           

In a week of cloudy Swiss Spring weather, one has to be up early to snatch at the rare hours of blue. 

With a good morning predicted, I was up before sunrise to catch the first uphill train to Alp Grum, hoping for a reward before the clouds came. 

With the restaurant and hotel closed, other than the passing trains, I was the only human for miles and miles around. Cutting my way through icy paths and sheltering from the cold wind as banks of clouds scudded across the sky, opening and closing over the scene like a manic theatre curtain. 

I lie in wait for my prey. 

Such is the excitement of exploring uncharted icy lands like a cold and lazy Indiana Jones who takes the train to his adventures and then waits around for hours for a few seconds of action. I see why Steven Spielberg didn't make "Indiana Jones and the Allegras of Grum".

Allegra 3514 swings around the big curve as it enters Alp Grum station. 27 April 2019, Switzerland. Cavaglia station is visible way down to the left side of the valley in shadow, and one of the in-between levels is visible just above the © symbol. The way the Swiss railways can climb mountains has to be seen to be believed.

Unusually, the two metre-gauge tracks here (main and passing track) are very close together through this curve - almost like non-overlapping gauntlet tracks. I guess they didn't want to put a turnout on the curve and it is too sharp for a properly spaced track on the inside here. You can see this on Google Earth where the tracks are properly spaced at the station (to the right on the near side here) and at the turnout (behind the small hill)
