a woman you always loved
who still smells sweet like oranges
Maybe you can’t see her but she’s still here
Telling jokes from your childhood in Puerto Rico
When you were the fastest runner in town.

tell her how the bodega you went to for 30 years
changed owners and how you feel
about your new professional neighbors
who wear fancy business suits
even on hot summer Saturdays.

Wrap one arm around your ghost
As you eat breakfast together
Read the too short obituaries together
Watch fast action movies together
Walk around Brooklyn together.
Cry at the evening news together.

You don’t stop having opinions
Just because you’re dead.
You don’t stop needing someone
When it’s the middle of the night
And you’re throwing the covers
Off your queen sized bed.

You’d always found a way to dance
on long evenings to Lee Hazlewood
her delicate feet on top of your lanky pair

and let the people gape and
turn their eyes onto the floor
They didn’t know Eva when she was 6
when she first learned to skip
and they didn’t know her when she was 64.

They didn’t know the way she used to sit
with her chin on the top of both
folded hands like living flesh origami
They didn’t know the way she’d laugh
so hard and spontaneously
she’d sometimes squirt a little too.

And they have limited conceptions of time
because they think when she was hit
by that bus on DeKalb that cold winter day
she would cease to exist like a
fragment of a fragment
or a raindrop that finally reaches the bottom of the pane

You smell her. You hold her close against your body.

because she was always there for you and
you can’t do this alone.
Why give up on someone just because
the humans in one reality say she’s dead?
