Graywacke - a photo on Flickriver

Graywacke

            Mount Tamalpais, California

An outcropping of graywacke on the south slope of Mt Tam.  The rock can be easily identified by its fracturing into flat faces, steps, or stairs.  

Described as a dirty sandstone, these rocks were created by underwater avalanches known as turbidity currents.  Instead of gravity sorting mud into shale, and sand grains into sandstone, and so forth, these materials are jumbled together into graywacke.  The colliding Pacific and North American tectonic plates have pushed these and other ocean floor rocks up onto the North American plate, constructing much of what is now coastal California.
