The Red Cathedral

When you walk into the Golden Canyon it doesn't take long to notice the cliffs of the Red Cathedral ahead of you.  These reddish rocks above the softer pastel yellow siltstone that gives the canyon its name.

The Red Cathedral rocks originated from the alluvial deposits of a stream carrying volcanic ash.  This ash was dropped into a lake that was already collecting the salts and sediments that eventually produced the yellow siltstone we see today.  About five million years ago the lake dried out and these deposits, known as the Furnace Creek Formation, were eventually uplifted as part of the Black Mountains when the modern Death Valley formed.
