The Augustiner-Chorherrenstift Vorau is located in the north-eastern Styria (Austria), in the market town of Vorau.

The monastery goes on a foundation of margrave Ottokar III. from Traungau back in 1163, which for this purpose his possessions in the northeastern Styria between Wechsel and Masenberg the Salzburg Archbishop handed over. The first Augustinian canons came from Salzburg and Seckau. After the destruction of the abbey in 1237, the reconstruction took place quickly. In 1277, King Rudolf I of Habsburg issued a letter of protection to the monastery. A renewed fire devastated the monastery building in 1384. The 1503 to 1505 angry plague fell in the Vorauer parish 800 people to the victim. By Emperor Maximilian I the pen was awarded the district court with stick and gallows. After the death of Provost Geyer in 1542, the monastery threatened to go out during the Reformation, because there was only one canon left. The existential crisis was not completed until 1544 with the appointment of a new provost. A renewed plague epidemic demanded in 1598 in Vorau 611 dead. By 1635, extensive new buildings were built. Provost Matthias Singer set up a pharmacy in 1651 for the population. From 1660 to 1662 was the new building of the collegiate church, the old Prälatur was demolished in the course of the reconstruction of the western and northern tract in 1727. In 1736, the Chorherrenstift with 46 canons reached the highest membership level in its history. The monastery established a secondary school in 1778. From 1812 to 1817 a grammar school and from 1839 to 1843 a private gymnasium with choir director's institute was led. The fortress walls were demolished in 1844 and partially filled the moat, the pin lost thereby its castle character (Wikipedia).
