Astley Hall - a photo on Flickriver

Astley Hall

            Dating back to the 1570s, Astley Hall in Chorley is surrounded by the beautiful Astley Park with its woodland, lake and Victorian walled garden. Inside, the museum and gallery house more than 330 works of art (by the likes of Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland) including portraits of the hall’s former residents, landscapes from the area and studies of local dignitaries.

There are also lovely creamware and glassware pottery collections, four Flemish tapestries from the 1600s depicting the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece and some fine English furniture dating from the 17th to the 19th century including a four poster thought to have accommodated one Oliver Cromwell.

Those interested in World War 1 will enjoy the Chorley Pals militaria on display (the hall serves as Chorley’s war memorial). Thanks to excavation which revealed Bronze Age occupation on the site, there is also a collection of finds from that era to be explored, including pottery shards, human remains and urns.
