🏠 What Is the Shore Station?
The shore station was the land-based support hub for the Muckle Flugga Lighthouse, located on a jagged sea stack off Unst. Since the lighthouse itself was inaccessible during storms and isolated from the mainland, the shore station served as:
- Accommodation for lighthouse keepers during their month-long shore leave
- Storage and logistics center for supplies, fuel, and maintenance equipment
- Launch site for the Grace Darling, the boat used to ferry keepers and goods to the lighthouse
Architecture & Layout
Designated a Category C listed building in 1998, the shore station complex includes:
- Main accommodation block: A symmetrical 2-storey, 7-bay building with flanking single-storey wings. Harled and whitewashed, it features sash windows, stone dressings, and flat roofs with four chimneys.
- Cottages: A 3-bay single-storey cottage and a south cottage with steps leading down to the slipway.
- Slipway and derrick: Used for launching and retrieving the Grace Darling.
- Water cistern and walled garden: Essential for fresh water and a touch of greenery in this rugged landscape.
- Boundary walls and gatepiers: Enclosing the site and giving it a fortress-like feel against the North Sea gales.

- Built in 1856, shortly after the lighthouse itself was commissioned during the Crimean War to protect Royal Navy vessels.
- The lighthouse was originally called North Unst, renamed Muckle Flugga in 1964.
- The shore station played a vital role during World War II, housing military communications equipment and transmitting service messages.
- Supplies were winched up to the lighthouse using a blondin cable hoist, from a natural cleft in the rocks that offered minimal shelter.

📚 Cultural Footnotes
- Robert Louis Stevenson, son of lighthouse designer Thomas Stevenson, visited in 1869. The dramatic setting inspired the map in Treasure Island.
